THE WORLD – REALITY
Panel E, Detail 1

Are we unified? This panel presents aspects of an impersonal, unsocial and chaotic world with a potential for gross eruption. This details depicts exploding planes, burning skyscrapers, fields of genetically manipulated maize and traffic snarls.

Global Villager 91: a large American man from Alabama with his mind divided into strict partitions

Global Villager 97: an ill woman from Chile, trying to reach her heart, shocked by the vision of a brick wall

Global Villager 60: a man from Australia, his menacing green fist on the horizon, behind the blue wall

Global Villager 87: a pink American woman of Indian origin with hands folded

Many of the Global Villagers depicted here suffer from a feeling of separation, disconnection or loneliness, much of which is self-imposed. The judgemental man from Alabama, whose heavy head is divided into strict categories, condemns his neigbours and becomes an outcast. He compensates for his “loneliness” by bonding with other fanatic football fans and sparking off hooliganism.

Does technology connect or disconnect us? While the internet provides us with instant access to a world of information and enables us to send messages to multiple recipients simultaneously, it is also a way of avoiding direct contact: the American computer expert sends e-mails to her colleague in the next room rather than risking personal confrontation.

Huge urban sprawls, thousands of products, mass advertising – all these are symbols of the complexity of our world, of which an overview is no longer possible. We overlook the fact that we – as members of the global community – have created this situation with our every thought and deed. The refrigerated organs from executed Chinese prisoners inside the blue plane are a sign of our deep disunity and the cruelty we are capable of inflicting on others.
